Richard,
I did mine last winter when I had the engine out. After grinding off any
rust I primered and sprayed with matching paint to my car color - from a
local auto paint supplier. Although I'm not a professional painter by any
means - after reinstalling all the wiring, etc it looks great as any minor
defects are covered by the many attachments. I think George mentioned the
car color spray cans - my supplier has these but I just sprayed with a small
gun and a quart of paint and it went OK - Not going for a show car. They
also offer many different types of primer in both bulk and spray - ask and
they will get you the correct one for what you're doing and to bond with the
specific brand paint you use.
