Hmm.  Not good to hear that you had problems getting the fuel pump to work.  
It's a 1970.  The steel fuel line carb side seals up nicely.  The tank side 
has the braided fuel line (you're right--braided steel lines are over kill 
for this application) has a fitting that goes straight to the tank.  No way 
to attach the fuel line here without a fitting of some sort.

Maybe I'm in trouble for attaching a non-original part. ;O)  I wanted to use 
the SU (for one thing it's a whole lot quieter) but just gave up due to the 
problems I was having.  Surely I'm not the first person to do this?  I was 
hoping I could get a tubing/fitting that would make the connection reliable 
and simple.  Reliability is obviously important to me and a leaky fuel pump 
isn't an option.
