A few years ago, I e-mailed another list to inquire if anyone knew why coils were so often mounted upside-down. Someone with an electrical engineering background replied that coils were oil-filled in order to provide cooling and that the upside-down orientation was intended to ensure that there was always oil around the contact end of the coil which, he said, was where most of the internal heat was generated. Made sense to me (and I've only once encountered a coil that leaked). Lawrie British Sportscar Center |
