Finally! Yesterday afternoon the commuting machine came alive after more than
three months in various stages of undress. Did its 20 minutes at 1800-2000 rpm
for the bedding-in ceremony, then back into the garage for retorquing and
resetting. Nothing exotic, ended up with .060" over 8.7:1 pistons, a sleeve in
#2 cylinder, valves redone, mild regrind cam, new oil pump, double row chain
system. While checking for oil pressure I put my compression gauge on #1 and
read 165 psi after the third compression stroke (without the rings seated yet).
Yesterday, while doing the cam bed, I intentionally left the crankcase breather
pipe open ended -- not a sign of smoke!
More to come - many lessons were learned - I'll be putting some web pages
together on the entire process.
