I figured there might be some logic to these numbers. Now I'm not so sure
because I have -
SN-6125/04 TPM 1060 Jaegar gauge in 65 MGB (had OD)
SN-6144/02 TPM 1020 Smith gauge in 67 BGT w OD
SN-5230/065 TPM 1280 71 BGT (but I don't think it was the original)
SN-5230/13 TPM 1000 This one I got from Scotland Yard in Denver I think,
about 15 or so years ago. It has marked on the back "75B" in magic marker,
on the side it has "good speed 82".
The SN6142 may indicate a mid 60s (66?) vintage if there was some scheme in
the numbering. You didn't mention whether it was a Smith or Jaegar marked
gauge. Didn't Jaegar become Smiths around 65? Another key difference in the
early models (pre-68) at least for the MGBs is that the high beam blue
indicator light is on the bottom of the gauge rather than mounted on the
dashboard.
