Chris,
I remember that a key was somewhere under the hood and I think somewhere
near the fuse box, but it's been almost 29 years since I bought my 72 B and
I removed the key and gave it to my wife not too long after I bought the
car. I remember thinking that it wasn't such a good idea in the first
place. I think the key may have been held to the passenger wheel well by a
screw. Sorry about the vagueness in my answer but that's the way it is with
us old farts.

Subject: Key hidden in the engine compartment?
OK, call me an uninformed newbie, but......
I'm trading email with a guy about a 71B he has for sale and his last email
threw me.
He says, and I quote...
"The key hidden in the engine compartment has never been removed."
Key hidden in the engine compartment? Since I just had to break into my
engine compartment with a length of bent coat hanger, this worries me a bit?
What's the scoop?
-Chris
(Maybe about to buy a 71 B)
