Asbestos is a fibrous, crystalline mineral (serpentine, I believe)
that like most rocks, has excellent thermal insulating properties.
It also is easily broken leaving the fibers drifting in the air and into
our lungs. Yet, my concern with the asbestos heat blankets on
the carb shield is not what the asbestos might do to me, it's what
some eco-freak might do if they found out about it! The haz-mat
team would be out sealing my LBC in a plastic bag in minutes!
On my car, I put on a face mask then flushed the oil soaked
asbestos blankets with brake cleaner until the oil was gone. I
did this all out in the driveway. Once clean(ish) and dry, I sprayed
the pads with ultra high temp white header paint. The goal was
not to insulate them but to GLUE the asbestos fibers back together.
Of course, just the act of spraying paint on them could be dangerous
without a face mask. The trick was to 'fog' the material with paint
from a distance until the free-ish fibers stuck together.
I guess I should include a disclaimer. I do no recommend this
process, I simply report upon how I refinished the heat shield
on my car.

Best,

Rick
