My girlfriend Kim and I attended the Sandown MG show yesterday. There were
lots of stands selling new and used parts and we bought a few bits and bobs
for our recently acquired MGBGT. I find the standard steering wheel too
large and very close to my legs so we got a nice Mountney one and a boss for
35 quid. The guy had several but they were selling fast. Kim specifically
wanted one with an MG symbol in the centre and he had a special 'flat' one
which was more expensive at 45 quid, but this one later appeared on the
stand with the 35 quid sticker on it so we dived in and bought it. The chap
had to change the boss over as he said that >1976 MGBs used a different
column/splines. (anyone know?) Ours is 1978 and later today I will attempt
to fit the new steering wheel. Hope it fits ok. We also bought two new
chrome SU air filters for 14.50ukp for the pair (bargain!), a K&N breather
for the 'smokey joes cafe' crankcase vent pipe. I got a rigid round type
washer bottle and bracket for 4 quid to replace the horrible 'sack' thing.
Also got a new rad cap (10 lbs) as I suspect the current cap is not
operating correctly. We had the heater hose blow, then the top hose about
two days later. I looked for a nice alloy rocker cover at the show but alas
our money ran out. I was supprised no MGs use those chrome T-bars on the
rocker cover which seem obligatory on minis. I couldn't see any for sale,
but there is a mini show next weekend at Sandown so I'll get some there.
Also got some new switches to replace the present melted ones.
The fuel gauge has packed in recently. It did read zero, but now reads
totally full. I suspect the wire has shorted to the chassis but I can't see
where. The wire into the sender is secure (does it pull off like a spade
connector?). One thing I did notice the other day was the heated rear window
suddenly sprang to life for about 5 minutes and then went dead again. Looks
like the new switch may cure this. Do I simply dig the switches out of the
dash with a screwdriver?
That's all for now,
Scott
