Congradulations on your purchase!!
Go ahead and replace with 12 v battery, I did that on both of mine and I
have been pleased. But don't hesitate to jump start the 2 six's, just put
the positive jumper cable on the positive battery post from the battery
which has the positive cable going to the starter (the positive on the other
battery goes to the cross over cable that goes to the negative on the other
battery) and put the negative jumper cable on a good chassis ground spot or
on the cable that grounds to the side of the battery compartment.
On the brakes, you will need to get to the master cylinder (under the hood)
to top up the brake fluid. If you allow the brake fluid to get too low in
the master cylinder you will just introduce even more air into the lines.
Getting the hood open, I don't know what else to try. But once you get it
open, make your first task to fix an emergency release for the hood latch.
You can get a long plastic tie and loop one end on the release lever on the
hood latch (it will be obvious how it functions once you get in there).
Drill a hole in the inner fender on the left side behind the headlight and
run the loose end of the plastic tie out that hole so you can reach the end
of it from the front wheel well behind the headlight. you will always be
confident after doing this that you have a way to get the latch released.
