British vs. English (sorta LBC related)

OK. One of the SCCA guys runs a Van Diemen Formula Ford in 
Solo II and he says it is English.  I know my MG Midget is British.
How do I explain the difference?  Is there a difference?  Why do you 
guys across the pond have to make things so confusing?
