Oh dear. This is basically what happened to mine. Except that I knew it
had a knock, didn't pay much money for it, and I did get almost two years
out of it first. Same "just been rebuilt" story, though -- and same
abrupt ending.
You did the right thing shutting it down. You will need to tear into the
bottom of the engine to find out the extent of the damage. Merely
removing the oil pan will do, (although that is not quite so simple as it
sounds). At the least you will want a set of rod bearings, but there are
many possible degrees of involvement, up to a full short block rebuild
(not necessarily a new engine, unless you are in a big hurry to get back
on the road). You may want to find a different "specialist" to advise
you. What part of the country are you in?
Julie Ann Phillips had this to say:
>I recently purchased a nice restored 74 cb mgb.The previous owner stated
>the engine was rebuilt 8000 miles prior to the purchase. The engine
>always rattled a little on start up but my "foreign car specialist"
>assured me this was normal.I have only driven the car about 100 miles in
>the 2 months i've owned it.Today the engine started to rattle LOUD as i
>was driving it as soon as i relized it was the engine and not something
>in the transmission, which was my first guess i shut it off.I removed the
>valve cover and everything is intact and the" rattle now knock" is in
>the bottom end. Will someone tell me what it most likely is?Will i be
>needing a new engine? Thanks for any help you can offer.......
