The workshop manual describes removing shims under the top cover to
reduce play. My experience was that the wear was concentrated in the
center of the rack, so removing shims, while tightening up the
"on-center" play, over-tightened the rack at extreme lock, making it hard
to turn. But perhaps your case is not as far advanced (mine had almost an
inch of "slop" on center at the wheel). So give it a try, it's very
simple.
