During Desert Shield, several media outlets reported that fuel in the
US actually would cost over $8/gal if you figured in the tax dollars
that went into keeping the oil flowing from the Middle East. Note
that this was before the shooting war started. I've often wondered
how much truth was in that number. Clearly some portion of the US
military budget and other federal international efforts budgets are
aimed at this outcome. Of course, the problem in the UK and elsewhere
is that not only do you pay high taxes at the pump, but you pay high
income taxes and high VAT and high...
