Carl, I taught both my kids to drive in a 1970 MGB.  I had them start by
practicing in the driveway.  Our driveway was about 40 feet long and had a
turn around space to the side.  They stalled a lot, and spun dirt
everywhere, but both finally got the hang of it.  Their motivation was that
I refused to take them out on the road until they could at least travel the
driveway without stalling.
