Sounds like the threads are knackered on both damper cap and dashpot cover -
probably a fault in the latter caused the problem in the former which is why
is is now happening on both cars (it would seem). A long cruise won't in
itself cause a problem since it is accelleration that puts pressure on the
threads, not cruising. Metro Turbo's have a metal locking ring holding the
plastic cap in place, you could jury-rig a similar arrangement rather than
replace dashpot cover and damper rods, I suppose.
