Derek,
I agree with the others about the extra fuel filter. Could be the DPO
thought there was oil being sucked up and wanted to see it through the clear
filter?
As for the steering rack boots. I would stop driving the car until they are
replaced. It depends on how long the boot was ripped and what driving
conditions the car was driven in, such as dusty or rainy, whether any damage
was done. Take the boots off and see what the rack looks like. If it isn't
dirty, just clean it up as best you can and put new boots and 90 wt oil back
in the boots. The rack is very sturdy, so it probably will be OK. If there
is a lot of dirt and grit on the rack, you should think about flushing the
whole mechanism out with solvent to remove any grit from the pinion gear by
removing the plate on top and pouring solvent down over the pinion gear.
