Correct, there would be only one type of axle for a 78. The changeover
date was somewhere around 1965, I believe (at the introduction of the
GT). I find the Moss catalog a good reference for this sort of thing. It
almost always gives model year or vehicle number changeover dates for
each component. I thought VB did, too, but I haven't seen one for a while.
BTW that shop has no idea what they're talking about. A Spitfire has IRS
so doesn't have rear axle seals (since it doesn't have a rear axle). So
you can see how it must have tied up the bay for a looooong time...
