Well, since you asked, I think I'd choose a very thoroughly-prepped MGB-GT.
At least it sounds like the MGB that ran to Peking handled the abuse well.
They're simple and reliable as classics go. Was it a Roadster or GT? A GT
could carry more stuff and spares. My second choice would probably be a
Porsche (356? hmm....maybe a 912) for it's air-cooled engine and relatively
rugged engineering and traction. Bet you can find a working VW engine (and
other parts) almost anywhere and they're practically interchangeable.
