Jonathan Wood's book says the 63 B at Le Mans, 7DBL had twin
choke webers and an aluminum nosepiece that was worth 6 mph, twin
fuel taknks and 3.307:1 final drive, special cams, 11:1
compression, and a single 45 DCOE. Top speed in the region of 130
mph. The car was driven by Hutcheson/Hopkirk. Three cars were
entered
Three new cars again. The 64 MGB, BMO 541B, had stock body work
with an extended nose like that used on some on the 63 car.
Jonathan Wood's book says the 64 version,had 1801 cc, 19.4:1
compression, 20.5 gal. fuel tank, and developed around 125 HP.
One front fender was borrowed from the Sprintzel and Hedges car.
BMO 541B averaged 99.945. Drivers were Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew
Hedges.
One, maybe two cars. The 65 B, DRX 255C finished 11th overall,
the hightest postwar MG finish.
Average speed 98.24. This car supposedly had 1801cc, 10.4:1
compression, high lift camshaft, oversized oil pump and sump,
close ratio gearbox, 3.3:1 rear end, and a 45DCOE twin choke.
ONLY one twin cam ever went. This being a much smaller, almost
non factory help, privately done car SRX 210. The following is
from G. Robson's book "MIghty MG's'
1959 ran as a roadster using an 'extra' EX 182 body. Fastest lap
at 99.47. Ran well until the car had an argument with a large
dog. The nose was damaged to the extent that air flow was
compromised and the car lost the gearbox due to overheating.
1960 the car, now owned by Ted Lund, converted to a fastback
coupe was modified to 1762 cc and fitted with two dual Webers,
and running a 4.1:1 axel. Average speed is given as 91.12 and
fastest lap as 99.12. Supposedly would do 130 in a straight line.
Car driven by Lund and Colin Escot. This car won the 1601-2000
class and beat out the Triumph TRS team with their 160 BHP
engines and glass bodies.
1961, basically the same car. Power is listed as 128 BHP and the
car could hit 140. The last lap it made, number 14, it lapped at
101.66 and promptly lost a rod. Driver Ted Lund with Bob Olthoff
never getting behind the wheel during the race.
Thus the twin cam still appears faster than the MGB.
