I am an unrepentant advocate of Armstrong shocks.
They last several times as long as anything offered as original equipment in
the 50s and 60s, and if kept topped up are very reliable.
Having said that, I agree that the original seals are Mickey Mouse. I had
mine rebuilt for my race car with hard chromed shafts and double lip seals.
Do it once properly and they last the life of the car.
And they are a hell of a lot better than some of the front conversion kits
that set the shock to one side, introducing a bending moment to the
suspension that is quite unwelcome. There is a little more excuse for using
tubes on the rear, but again, rebuilt properly and with competition valves, I
have never had the inclination to replace the shocks on my race car (and
believe me, if I thought there was any performance point to it, I'd do it in
a flash).

PS - Good explanation, Kelvin.
