Bob

(your original message is reproduced below)

I have also been through this and it is an unwelcome experience. I
would surely like to know the material of the new guides with which you
now are having trouble.

I would also like to invite other listers to offer their opinions on the
use of cast iron vs. phosphor bronze guides. I have used both, and
goodness knows have had problems with the cast iron. I do not recall
valves sticking with the bronze guides, but my memory is dim on this.

Just as a guesstimation, I would judge the clearances are more critical
with the cast iron, i.e., that they are less forgiving of mistakes.
Also they probably are less forgiving of marginal lubrication which may
exist if the entire engine is not rebuilt. I am thinking in terms of a
worn rocker bush and/or rocker shaft journal, or perhaps a tired oil
pump, when I say that.

Bob, in the opinion of this non-expert, if you have the bronze guides
you might get through this, but if you installed cast iron I fear your
goose may be cooked and that another teardown may lie ahead. Bummer.

Even with the phosphor bronze, pay special heed to your lubrication.
If rocker pivot clearances are too great, you may be losing oil there
which belongs out at the valve stems.

JMHO and YMMV

Good luck.

I just did a partial rebuild on my XPAG engine. I had the cylinder head done
by a professional British car mechanic, new everything on the head plus
hardened valve seats. I ran the engine in the garage yesterday for an hour
between 1500 and 2000 rpm. All was well. Today I took it out for a very mild
drive around the neighborhood. A couple blocks from home the number two
exhaust valve stuck. It eventually popped back out and I made it home. Is
this a big problem or just a normal thing with a recently rebuilt engine?
