The Alpine is the car I lusted after before the B came on the scene - its
lines haven't aged anywhere near as well as the B, though, IMO.
An Alpine almost certainly should have a 12v coil in my estimation, and a 6v
coil, for use with later (in MGB evolution) externally ballasted systems
would get very hot as well as possibly wearing out the points. I don't know
if Lucas made a 6v Sport coil, but if you have access to a digital
multimeter you could try measuring the resistance. An MGB 12v coil measures
about 3 ohms and a 6v about 1.5 ohms. Other than that the only other things
that could increase the heat in the coil are a higher system voltage than
normal (measure that too, just in case) or a higher dwell than normal,
although that would affect running. If your multimeter is for car use it
may well have a dwell setting (maybe two - degrees and percent), the earlier
MGB is 60 degrees +-3.
