Steve:
U joints are a "right of passage" job. Sometimes the job is easy
and can be performed with a large bench vise. Other times after hours of
swearing the newly installed but damaged joint fails in a month.
My very humble suggestion, is to buy the u joints. Remove the
driveshaft. Paint alignment marks on the driveshaft, so it goes back
together correctly. Then take the shaft and joints to a mechanic. They
will normally charge a very reasonable fee to pop the u joints in. That way
you are only paying for the sometimes tricky job. Use expertise when you
can. Unless you are planning on changing lots of joints in the future and
really value the learning experience.
