Oh yeah, I'm sure they'd work. Just more hassle to open and close, plus
the expense and the "ricky racer" look. What I was referring to as
reinforcement (I did this on my old aluminum hood which came "pre-folded"
from the PO -- purely as a stopgap measure until I replaced it) is to
remove the screws (or rivets, I forget which) from the safety catch, and
slide a pre-tapped steel plate behind that section of the inner hood, and
screw the safety catch through to the plate. Anyway, my inspiration for
all this is having once witnessed a bonnet takeoff incident, in which the
safety catch tore clean out of the aluminum. Not to mention the dozens of
bent aluminum bonnets I've seen which had apparently suffered a similar
fate.
