I did this to my wheel over 18 monts ago and it is clean and beautiful today.
The key is to get very fine wool, like 000 or 0000. Very unlikely any
strand of that silky steel wool would be strong enough to penetral any
semi-hard metal. This is the kind of stuff used on antique furniture to
polish the finish. Really, it does work.
