I have heard of this working but know of a horror story relating to this
also.  A fellow worker did this to his Mercury Grand Marquis.  He then
changed the oil and started on a trip.  The Kerosene loosened up the sludge
but it did not all drain out when he changed the oil.  The sludge that
remained sucked up and plugged the pick up screen.  This didn't happen until
they were on the highway at higher RPM so by the time the oil light came on
and they stopped they had already lost a bearing.  I guess just a word of
caution on what can happen if you do this and don't get all the gunk drained
out afterword.
