I haven't done this on my '73 Bs, but I did it last summer on my '76B - and
I can't even remember exactly how. There were moments when I was almost
sure I would have to take the box out. ' Think I had to drop the pedals
out, and there were some bolts/nuts which I could only get out from below,
lying in the footwell, reaching up through the opening. It was hard enough
getting the M/Cs out (I replaced the clutch M/C while I was at it - ' don't
want to go there again any time soon). Getting it all back together was
harder yet). The layout of the box in the '76 B is quite different from
that on a pre-booster car.
I went the expensive route and bought a new M/C. ' Got talked into it by a
local "expert" - in order to switch to DOT 5 - which was a big mistake!
But that's another story...
