I'm not sure about the 1500 Midget, but the 1275 has a plastic tube that
holds the dipstick in place. It is surprisingly easy to break, I've been
told. Its about 3-4 inches long, black plastic, and I found one in the sump
of an engine that I recently dismantled.
Allegedly, it was an old trick of unscrupulous mechanics. They would break
the tube on purpose. Then when the owner reported an unsual rattling noise
down there, the car would be brought back for engine maintenance. A new one
just presses into place, once the pan comes off.
