Dave - if you have all the springs on the shoes the pistons should be
back-to-back in the slaves anyway, if not, there is something wrong. Slack
adjusters will cause the pistons to move out further under braking giving
increased pedal travel and signifying that they always start from the same
place i.e. fully home.
