I don't know if anyone still cares about this. Being on the digest
offers very few opportunities to answer technical questions since there
are many knowledgeable people with faster response time. That and I
have to be at my computer when I remember the question.
We used to weld a lot of cast iron at our machine shop. Use a normal
arc welder and nickel rod. The key is to beat the weld with a hammer
during the cooling process to reduce residual stresses. Otherwise you
will get another crack near the original.
I have used this on exhaust manifolds and it worked but whether it
would work on an MG manifold with your equipment and technique I have no
idea. If my latest attempts at torch welding are any indication I would
have nothing left but a twisted and cracked pile of metal. I guess that
all of the other education has just pushed the useful stuff out. If
the manifold is already cracked you probably have little to lose.
