I think the problem is finding a normal spanner that fits well on the
spokes. Your basic cheap-o 1/4" wrench has a lot of slop and tends to
round off the nipples. Plus the spoke wrench is twice as long and gives
you that much more leverage. Since the nipples are frequently seized you
need all the help you can get from the tool. Worth it IMHO.
