Hi all,
I've been talking to Hans Pedersen (www.hi-flow.com) and he's been doing a
lot of research into octane ratings in the USA and in Australia (he sells a
supercharger y'see). Apparently, the US octane rating of 92, is the
equivalent of 98 octane here in Australia! So Tim P., that would go a long
way to explaining that consistent pinging problem you have, and many other
Aussies complain of. We are on the extreme borderline here. Also Eric, it
explains why you switching to 100 (australian rated) octane AvGas, makes
such an improvement to your car. You are actually just giving it the fuel it
was originally designed for!
There is good news however, Shell in Victoria have release a new Premium
Unleaded fuel called Optimax, which is 98 (australian rating) octane. At the
moment, this is only available in Vic. but will be available throughout Aus.
sometime during 2000.
Good news eh? Well, so long as you have an unleaded conversion. They aren't
expensive, just new seats really. The std MGB valves are ok for unleaded
according to various sources I've spoken with.
Cheers,
Neil.
