At my shop, where we know what we are doing with MG engines, we'd be
reluctant just to change a head gasket. The question always arises as to why
it blew, and what's to prevent a replacement from doing the same thing.
However - and it's a big however! - if we removed the head to fix a blown
gasket AND performed a complete valve job on the head, including fitting
hard exhaust seats, new valves, springs and guides, and surfacing the head,
followed by refitting the head with new head studs to minimize the risk of
further problems, we'd still not be able to get the bill up to $800! I'm
figuring $650 max, probably less.
So, if your $800 quote is just to replace a head gasket, may I suggest
second thoughts about the suitability of the shop you are dealing with?
