I found a great web site (you all probably know of it) that lists the Car 
numbers, what they mean and the engine numbers and what they mean.  If anybody 
cares to visit, it's  at the bottom of the MGB Experience FAQ page -

Tony,
The quickest way to tell if the engine is a 3-main is by the presence of a 
mechanical tachometer drive.  All 3 mains used in MGB's had them.  If it is 
there, it is located on the drivers side at the back of the block where the 
rear plate bolts to the block, about  6" or so above the mating seam of the 
oil pan and block.  But, check the numbers too.
