There has been a bit of discussion about the difference between torque and
horsepower as a measure of engine power. Speaking from a background in
thermodynamics, I am a bit confused. If two engines have equal output, they
should have perform equal work. If they do not, it is because one is not as
efficient as the other (assuming equal amounts of combustible, oxygenated
fuel are provided), implying that the inefficient engine is running hotter
than the stronger one. (That is, more of the energy released from the fuel
combustion goes to heat the engine, rather that turning the crankshaft.)
Is this correct? What is the difference between torque and horsepower?
