Who saw the back to back 'Legends of Motorsport' programs last night on
Speedvision devoted to old MG promotional newsreels? One was on Goldie
Gardner and EX179 in 1951 at Bonneville, one on the EX181 1957 runs at
Bonneville with Stirling Moss and Phil Hill and a promo piece from 1951 with
Ian Appleyard (of Jaguar NUB 120 fame) driving a fresh off the line TD from
Abingdon to a ski resort on the French/Italian border - great stuff. John
Thornley, Syd Enever and George Eyston all make appearances.
Last week I watched several hours of tape of this year's Bonneville Speed
week where some friends of mine set a class record with an Alfa Romeo Spider
(with help from the Michigan team who runs the MGA that was in the latest
'Safety Fast!' and in 'MGB Driver' in the March/April issue). It was
interesting to see the similarities after 40+ years and also differences in
things like the pusher vehicles used now versus the MG Team in '57 with about
8 guys hand pushing the car to start it on its run.
