Jerry,
Could be a U joint, though these usually will be detected by a series of
clunks at low speed in 1st gear as you describe.
I'd be checking out the rear shock mounting bolts, and the shock to axle
link.
Lindsay Porter's book covers U joint replacement very well. As he says, it's
not difficult, but it's not the "fairy tale" procedure noted in the original
workshop manuals.
