Ah, yes, another controversy for the list...
NGK BP6ES are my plug of choice. They cross reference from the original spec
properly, seem to have a good wide heat range and seem resistant to fouling.
I tried Bosch Platinums, which I absolutely swear by in my honda, but the
heat range wasn't quite right and the car didn't do quite as well. *Lots* of
folks I know with A's and B's swear by the NGKs, but of course "your mileage
may vary"
(I've never myself seen a Champion plug run right in an lbc, but maybe that's
something about "American part rejection syndrome"..)
The bottom line is that the best plug is the right heat range for your car,
burning clean like those color charts show.. and one that you keep clean and
gapped
There's lots of what I term "gimmick" plugs out now with multiple electrodes,
be it 2,3,or4.. The only problem with these is that basic electrical theory
states that electricity, like water, seeks the path of least resistance. This
means that it's likely that what will happen with these multi-path plugs is
that only one conducter is ever actually working, until it wears enough that
the path to the next one is now easier, ad infinitum. (unless by some freak
chance each electrode was exactly the same distance and electrical resistance
as the next) If there's a lot of gas or oil fouling, this *may* help, but
who's to say that the "dormant" electrodes won't be fouled by non-use by the
time they are needed to take up the slack from the one that is firing first.
They do prevent absolute failure of the plug if you have an electrode fail in
some way, but I've never had that happen to me so I don't stay up nights
worrying about it..
