Larry,
Some clean spark plug holes with an old sparkplug. Using a triangular
file, cut a notch from the sparking end up the threads to the top of the
threads. The edge of the file's cut will act as the tap you need. What
has caused the old threads to need chasing? Is the head off the
engine--how would you keep any filing from falling into the cylinder?
Heater boxes make great compost and peatmoss, though only a few cubic
inches at a time. The highest quality stuff is found under the heater
core which, as you have observed, is not easy to remove. But, as the
stuff tends to be wet and gooey, you might try rinsing it out with a
hose. First, go under the car and remove the rubber split-ball gizmo at
the bottom of the drain tube. Then, keeping a careful eye inside the
cockpit for leaks, use a hose to push in water and dislodge the compost.
After it's all clean and shiny, a screen on the intake can help. Some
use window screen. Something that I have used with apparent success is
house gutter screening, about 1/4 inch plastic mesh. Cut to fit the
chrome trim, the trim's posts fit through the holes. It's black, not too
conspicuous, and leaves do get filtered out by it.
