A good quality dial caliper (micrometer) (One of those is the right
name) would be perfect for the job, when you are measuring measure from
three diff places and recheck all of them so that you know if it is round.
I had an engine built once that was not measured right and the crank
journals were not round, they were withing spec at one diameter but 90
degrees away were way out of spec, to make a long story short I got 83
miles out of the engine before it hammered the bearings out the
sides of the connecting rods and needed another rebuild. When you are
cleaning up the cyl walls get a ridge reamer in addition to your cyl hone,
it will make the job much cleaner and more precise.
