I've always had great success with the following technique.
loosen the nut until the nut is flush with the end of the threaded
shaft
sitting down low in the seat use your knees behind the wheel
at the bottom to apply outward force on the wheel. (pushing the
wheel towards the drivers seat)
with one hand at the top of the wheel pulling out away from
the dash as well ...
gently but firmly rap on the nut/stalk with a soft faced hammer.
I actually use a piece of 2" by 2" by 4" long block of decking
banister rail (hard pressure treated lumber) coat hanger wired
to the side of my hammer. This gives me the weight and swing
power without damaging the nut or steering wheel surface.
The point of this effort is to hold the wheel out while impacting
the steering rod/nut... driving the rod out of the wheel rather than trying
to yank the wheel off of the column.
I've done this in junk yards on 20 year old rusters just using my hand
holding a window crank handle as a mallet.
