If you want a truely solid car assume that the sills are rotten also. The
sills are the frame railes that reside behind the rockers and are usually
shot if the rockers are. the only way to check them is from underneath
(they are on the outher edges of the floor boards) or they can be checked
by pulling the carpet off of them. The outer sills are the square edges
on the outer edge of the floor, they protrude slightly into the passenger
compartment. If any of these are rusted then they probably all are. If
they are to be done right then it will involve inner sills, lower sills,
inner rockers, outer rockers, probably jack points and outriggers,
heelboard extensions, and fender doglegs. All of these parts will cost
about $400 and will require A LOT OF WORK. I am in the middle of the
project and it is tough but it can be done. I would take that into
serious consideration. On the roadsters it is a harder process because
you don't have the rigidity of a roof to help hold the car together while
doing it. If you can't tell by sight how these parts are, measure the
door gaps in the rear at top and bottom and open and close the doors a few
times if the gaps are smaller at the top then it is indicitive of the car
sagging and therefore the sills will have to be done. If the gaps are
even and the doors engage and disengage well (stiff hinges are not a
problem) then you can probably avoid doing the sills. If you get the car
and you decide to do them get Lindsay Porter's book Guide to purchase and
DIY restoration. The book details the procedure fairly well. In general
all the problem areas of these cars remained constant so anywhere you had
problems on your '73 you should look on the '64.
