Larry,
The only think that I can think of off the top of my head that will cause the
diodes to fail is connecting the battery backward. In some cars, this will
cause the rectifying diodes to physical blow apart (there is a lot of current
flowing the wrong way).
Other than that, I cannot think of any messing around in the wiring that
would cause the diodes to fail.
