Scooter -
My guess is the PO has installed a defeat switch in series with the
trunk-lid switch that turns the trunk light on automatically when you raise
the lid. Handy idea I guess if you're inclined to leave trunk lid open for
long periods of time - long enough to drain the battery.
Regarding the 'crack of doom' - I replaced door skins - big job (especially
on my pull-handle B!) but it gives you the opportunity to rectify any
potential rust-through at the bottom of the doors. Don't just weld up the
fissure - it will crack again next to your weld. I know people who
successfully weld a reinforcing patch under the fissure - drilling holes on
either side through which to weld the patch from the outside.
