That is one of the D-est DPO stories I've ever heard... didn't occur to 
this mechanic to count the spark plug leads, eh? Maybe he couldn't count 
above 4...

I would suggest acquiring the correct 4-cylinder chopper and trying it as 
the simplest solution before changing anything else. Who knows, maybe 
everything else is OK?

Good luck, hopefully this particular DPO didn't leave any more boobytraps 
for you.
