If you're talking about MGBs, I seem to remember that at least one
starter bolt actually screws into the bellhousing, at least on my '71.
I also seem to recall that was the job for which I originally bought my
2-foot extension for the 3/8" ratchet, which made it a lot easier as it
meant I could put the wrench in front of the starter.
So unless you've got the engine and tranny pulled as a unit and going
back in as a unit, you'll have to install the starter after the engine's
in place.
3-main engines may be different, I've never worked on those. And if
you're talking about Midgets, it's been too long (or not long enough...
watch this space!)
