Hello all,
I recently installed an oil cooler into
my Little Tuna (she's a '77 MGB).
What I noticed immediately is that the
oil pressure narrowed.
Initially, she would run between 75psi
(on the highway) and 20psi at stop lights.
Now, with the new oil cooler, the high
side of the oil pressure decreased to about
60psi and the low side increased to about
30psi.
I think this is an excellent indication.
I have the following theory:
The high side decreased because the surface
area being serviced by the oil pump increased.
The low side increased because the oil is
being kept noticeably cooler, resulting in
an increase in oil viscosity.
If you do not have an oil cooler installed, I
am of the opinion that you should. Especially
if you live in warmer climates!
The oil cooler was purchased from Moss Motors
for less then 150 bucks (comes with everything
you need) and took me about 20 minutes to install.
I'll pay for peace of mind.
