Once left in the middle of the KMart lot with a similar frayed broken
cable in the 74B I wandered in to the store and came out with a cable
designed for brakes on ten speed bikes. I was just trying to decide how to
route attach and configure the cable when I realized I could just pull the
old broken inner cable out leaving the sheath in place. I did the same to
the bike cable resulting in a nice long piece of metal inner cable. I then
threaded the new inner cable back through the plastic cover in the MG until
it popped out the other end. Took a little patience, several trys at some
snags and a little WD40 (doesn't everybody carry a little can of that in the
boot?). Be sure the end that you thread back through is as perfectly tightly
bundled as possible with no little wires frayed out to snag.
Original looking outside, new cable inside! All for $2.00.
