To The Learned List
Today was the first day of using the "B" as my daily driver for 2
months.
Great day ,great weather and disappointment. After a shakedown last night
on taking the car out of storage I was ready for the day. By the way the
car is a 64 "B" 3 main engine. After attending the Rotary meeting at lunch
I went to renew my plates for another year. On the way (2 miles), I heard a
funny noise from the engine. The noise was like an octane knock and only
was severe "under load". I got my plates , went back to work and puzzled
over the noise. I couldn,t take it any more and left work to limp home and
check things out. I suspected cylinder #3 and low and behold 25 lb's
compression. Number two 150 lbs. Not going further I decided that the head
had to come off. I was concerned what I would find ,but 1 1/2 hrs later the
head is off. Relief is spelled "blown head gasket" between #3 and #4.
I have a spare gasket set so that's not a problem. The motor does not
have
many miles on it and doesn't even have ridges at the top of the cylinders.
My question is why did it blow ? There is no apparent warping or water
leaks. Is this something that I replace and hope or is there a common
cause. The internals and plugs look great. There was no overheating and 60
lbs. of oil pressure. The one thing that I have done with these engines
since I can remember is to advance them to the threshold of "ping". What I
mean here is that the car does "ping" slightly going up hills and under
load. Could this have caused the problem ?
Any idea's great fully accepted before I re assemble on Friday.
Thanks in Advance
