Doug -

MGBs used two different types of exhaust manifolds withthe  SUs:  pre- and
post '71.  Can't remember which way around this is but one of them has
thicker "shoulders" than the other.  If your's is mismatched to you intake
manifold,  the inboard studs may snug up tight on the intake manifold while
not doing much for the exhaust manifold.  The outboard studs pull the
exhaust manifold only, explaining why your's leaks only from #2 and #3.
It's worth checking...
